Last season, Ally Traylor was in charge of designing and printing Gameday Sheets for our Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders squad, and this year I decided to take on that role.
For those of you who are not familiar with these sheets, they are checklists/itineraries that are handed out a few days before each game. Not only do they keep everyone up to date on our gameday report time, what items to pack, the opposing team and what dances we will be doing, but they are also great for scrapbooking keepsakes.
Therefore, it is important to design them with football clipart, colorful borders and fun group photos. Throughout this season, I will be sharing our Gameday Sheets with you for a behind-the-scenes look at how the DCC prepares for every game.
The team’s third exhibition game was held at Cowboys Stadium on Aug. 25 against the St. Louis Rams, and although this was still the preseason for our Cowboys, this was like a regular season game for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
When our new team of 39 arrived at the stadium, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my last four seasons. It all started at Texas Stadium with Cassie, Whitney and Melissa by my side. I’m not sure if words can convey just how thankful I am to be a part of such an amazing team. We all love each other, motivate each other, inspire each other, complement each other and help each other.
We started the game off with plaza performances, which we were introduced last year. Throughout the season, each of the four groups take turns performing one of the game’s quarter changes on the East Plaza prior to kickoff. Fans have the opportunity to see us up-close and personal. For the first game, Group 1 kicked off the plaza performances with Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones.”
Following the plaza performance, Group 1 returned to the DCC locker room to grab water, fluff and puff (touch-up hair and makeup) and circle up. It is a gameday tradition that the squad circles up where we connect pinkies, crossing right arm over left, receive final notes and motivation from Kelli and Judy, then pray as a squad. From there, we hit the field for our pregame performance. We then moved into our normal game routine: player intros in a “V” on the field, anthem, kickoff on the platforms, sideline dancing and our four quarter changes.
Our 19 rookies were great this game. As a rookie, there are so many thoughts running through your head. You have no idea what to expect until you actually experience gameday, and the butterflies are uncontrollable. It is important to stay relaxed, focused and follow your veterans and leaders, while still enjoying every minute of it. You only have ONE first game as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. The experience is unforgettable. I am proud of each and every one of the rookies. This first preseason game was only the beginning of what will be a life-changing, amazing and exciting year.
For Game 1, we did the following performances:
Plaza performance by Group 1: Wild Ones by Flo Rida
Pregame: Thunderstruck by AC/DC
Quarter 1: Big Dog Daddy by Toby Keith
Quarter 2: Dance Again by Jennifer Lopez
Quarter 3: Good Girl by Carrie Underwood
Quarter 4: Wild Ones by Flo Rida
Four-year veteran Jackie Bob was our first Planet Tan GAMEDAY GIRL of the season!
At the end of the game, we returned to our DCC locker room where we immediately blasted celebration music, jumped up and down while hugging each other and screamed in excitement. We had just performed at our first game as a new squad and, of course, our Cowboys beat the Rams!
Judy and Kelli both congratulated all of us on getting the first game under our belt, and although there were a few critiques and game notes, that will only make us better as a team for Game 2. They told us that we couldn’t have had a better first performance.
What a wonderful way to kick off a great season: With an awesome group of rookies and veterans, a talented and motivating choreographer, an inspiring and smart director and part of the best organization and sisterhood in the world.
